Fort Bragg (Mendocino County, California)
Mendocino County · California · Pre-Civil War / Indian Wars

History & Significance
Fort Bragg emerged from the 1856 federal establishment of the Mendocino Indian Reservation, created in response to intense settler pressure during California's Gold Rush expansion. First Lieutenant Horatio Gates Gibson of the 3rd U.S. Artillery established the military garrison on June 11, 1857, naming it after his former commanding officer in the Mexican-American War, Captain Braxton Bragg.
Gibson and Company M initiated construction of essential buildings while performing the arduous labor of artisans and masons. By 1862, California volunteer infantry replaced the original federal garrison.
The post's modest garrison of 50–100 soldiers patrolled reservation boundaries and facilitated the confinement of Pomo and other Indigenous peoples during a period of violent conflict known as the Mendocino War (1859–1860). The post was evacuated in October 1864 after the steamer Panama transported the garrison to San Francisco, ending military occupation.
The reservation was discontinued in March 1866, and the land was opened for civilian settlement. The site subsequently transformed into a major lumber and fishing center; C.R. Johnson's Fort Bragg Redwood Company (later Union Lumber) began operations in the 1880s and dominated the regional economy for over a century. Fort Bragg's last surviving original structure is a building at 430 North Franklin Street, believed to have housed quartermaster operations or medical services.
