Fort Chokonikla (Hardee County, Florida)
Hardee County · Florida · Seminole Wars
History & Significance
Following the Second Seminole War, tensions between settlers and Seminole Indians prompted federal authorities to establish a trading post in Florida's interior on the northern edge of the Seminole reservation. The Kennedy-Darling Trading Post, constructed in spring 1849, was attacked and destroyed in July by defector Seminoles.
Reports of the attack motivated the U.S. Army to establish a chain of fortifications across the Florida Peninsula, with Fort Chokonikla beginning construction on October 26, 1849, as the first of this line. The fort consisted of three square blockhouses for defense and canvas tents for housing, positioned on high ground near the confluence of Paynes Creek and the Peace River.
The Seminoles did not attack the fort, but casualties were high due to disease-carrying mosquitoes, leading to abandonment in July 1850 after less than nine months. The site was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978; Florida acquired the land in 1974, and the park opened to the public in 1981.
