History & Significance

Designed by Simon Bernard, a former French military engineer who had served under Napoleon, construction commenced in 1825 with the cornerstone laid on June 11, 1825. The fort was established as part of a network of coastal defenses designed to protect New York Harbor following the War of 1812.

In 1839, the Federal government granted New York State's 27th Regiment permission to drill at the fort, making it the nation's first National Guard training camp; the following year Captain Robert E. Lee was assigned to improve the fort's defenses, serving as post engineer from 1841 to 1846. During the Civil War, the garrison expanded, a ship barrier across the Narrows assisted in protecting the harbor against Confederate raiders, troops helped suppress the New York Draft Riots of 1863, and the fort served as a prisoner-of-war camp.

In 1871 construction began on an 8-gun water battery and a 15-gun mortar battery, though the latter was never completed. The old fortress was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1974. Colonels Row, the Fort Hamilton Community Club, and the Harbor Defense Museum are on the National Register of Historic Places; the museum is located in the original masonry fort.
