Fort Harker (Kanopolis, Kansas)
Kanopolis · Kansas · Indian Wars
History & Significance
Fort Harker replaced Fort Ellsworth, located 1.6 km southwest, after the latter was abandoned when new fortifications were completed. General Winfield S. Hancock issued construction orders on November 17, 1866, for the new fort positioned northeast of Fort Ellsworth.
Major construction was likely completed by summer 1867. The Union Pacific Eastern Division railroad reached the fort in July 1867, with a depot and two large warehouses establishing it as the principal resupply route.
By year's end 1867, the post comprised a four-company garrison, supply depot, and over 75 buildings. The fort's primary mission pivoted with railroad arrival: troops stationed at Fort Harker in 1867 performed more wagon-train escorts in one year than troops at any other frontier fort in the post-Civil War era, yet by 1868 the role shifted to supply depot and troop staging.
In fall 1868, General Philip Henry Sheridan relocated his command headquarters from Fort Leavenworth to Fort Harker to direct winter campaigns against Native Americans. The fort endured tragedy: Asiatic cholera struck in summer 1867, with the first case diagnosed June 28, and within days civilians and soldiers died, spreading to surrounding settlements.
After Native displacement westward and railroad expansion diminished strategic importance, the fort's purpose ended. The Ellsworth County Historical Society now maintains three original sandstone buildings—the Guardhouse, Commanding Officers' Quarters, and Junior Officer's Quarters—all listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
