Fort Meeker (Meeker, Rio Blanco County, Colorado)
Meeker, Rio Blanco County · Colorado · Indian Wars

History & Significance
In September 1879, tensions between U.S. Indian Agent Nathan Meeker and the White River Ute people escalated into violent conflict. After Meeker demanded the Utes abandon hunting and horse racing to become farmers, armed conflict erupted simultaneously at the agency and at Milk Creek, 18 miles to the north.
The uprising resulted in Meeker's death and that of ten agency employees, along with a costly battle where Ute warriors led by Chief Colorow defeated Major Thomas T. Thornburgh's cavalry column. The United States Army responded by establishing the Camp on White River in October 1879 under General Wesley Merritt's command.
The cantonment served as a military presence during the subsequent forced relocation of most Ute bands to reservations in Utah. Abandoned in August 1883 following the treaty resolution, the site was subsequently platted as the town of Meeker in 1885, becoming the first permanent settlement and county seat of Rio Blanco County. Three original log structures from the 1880 garrison remain and are preserved, including the White River Museum, which houses artifacts documenting this pivotal episode in Colorado's frontier history.
