Carlisle Fort (Carlisle, Pennsylvania)
Carlisle · Pennsylvania · French and Indian War
History & Significance
In the wake of Braddock's defeat at the Battle of the Monongahela (July 1755), Pennsylvania frontier settlements faced devastating raids by Delaware and Shawnee warriors allied with France. Governor Robert Hunter Morris authorized Carlisle Fort as the colony's first officially commissioned defensive work, laid out in the center of Carlisle in July 1755—a modest stockade intended as a refuge for women and children during attacks.
Construction extended over two years, with the fort finally garrisoned by 1757. That May, Colonel John Stanwix arrived with five companies of the Royal American Regiment and reinforced the position with entrenchments and breastworks on the town's northeast edge.
Stanwix's capable administration—providing adequate provisions, ammunition, and even Cherokee scouts—made Carlisle a key military hub. The fort's most significant role came in 1758 when General John Forbes organized his expedition from Carlisle to attack Fort Duquesne; the fort served as a supply depot and military headquarters for this ultimately successful campaign.
Despite expectations of assault, Carlisle Fort was never attacked and fell into disuse after 1758. Some buildings associated with the fort were refurbished during the Revolutionary War and eventually incorporated into Carlisle Barracks, established formally in 1794. A Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission marker was placed at the site in 1961.
