History & Significance

Fort Bedford was constructed during the French and Indian War by British troops under the command of Colonel Henry Bouquet by order of General John Forbes. The fortified supply depot was dubbed Fort Bedford in honor of John Russell, the 4th Duke of Bedford.

The fort was a log star-shaped fortress with five bastions, walls enclosing approximately 1.45 acres, with the main gate on the south side protected by an earthen ravelin. Builders devised an innovative fortified elevated gallery providing access to and water from the Juniata River—believed to be the only fort ever constructed in America with this arrangement.

Fort Bedford was used primarily as a garrisoned supply depot until the close of the French and Indian War in 1763. The powder magazine building at 111 S. Juliana Street, a half-timber structure built in 1758, has been identified as the only existing man-made structure associated with the French and Indian War in the continental United States.

The fort was garrisoned by the Patriot-sympathizing Bedford County militia during the Revolutionary War, guarding frontier settlers against raids by British-led Seneca warriors. After the American War of Independence, the fort was abandoned and demolished; by 1794 when George Washington passed through, records indicated it was in decay.
