Fort Abercrombie (Abercrombie, North Dakota)
Abercrombie · North Dakota · Dakota War of 1862

History & Significance
Established by an Act of Congress on March 3, 1857, and constructed in 1858, Fort Abercrombie occupied a strategic position on the Red River in Dakota Territory. Lieutenant Colonel John J. Abercrombie initially located the post in an oxbow loop of the river, but the post was abandoned on July 25, 1859, and reoccupied in July 1860 due to flooding threats, with the new site situated on higher ground north of the original location.
The fort's importance lay in its role as a transportation crossroads: it guarded oxcart trails of the fur trade era, military supply wagon trains, stagecoach routes, and steamboat traffic on the Red River, and served as a supply base for two major gold-seeking expeditions across Dakota into Montana. During the Dakota War of 1862, the post underwent its most significant trial.
At the outbreak of the uprising, Fort Abercrombie was garrisoned by Company D of the 5th Minnesota Infantry Regiment, commanded by Captain John Vander Horck. The fort was not protected by blockhouses or a palisade during the siege, but these defensive structures were constructed soon afterward.
On September 23, 1862, five hundred volunteer soldiers under the command of Captain Burger arrived to reinforce the garrison, and the siege was lifted. Fort Abercrombie remained an active Army post until 1877, when the railroad and the establishment of reservations for the Dakotas had taken over the post's role.
