Fort Atkinson (Fort Calhoun, Nebraska)
Fort Calhoun · Nebraska · Indian Wars

History & Significance
Fort Atkinson was established in 1819 at the site of Council Bluff, which William Clark had recommended after the Lewis and Clark Expedition's 1804 visit. Colonel Henry Atkinson led the Yellowstone Expedition in 1819 to establish military posts along the Missouri River to support the American fur trade, foster relations with indigenous populations, and counteract British influence on the northern plains.
The expedition first built Cantonment Missouri as a winter camp in 1819, then relocated to higher ground and established the permanent Fort Atkinson in the summer of 1820 after spring flooding. At its peak, the garrison held nearly one quarter of the standing U.S. Army, approximately 1,200 soldiers.
The fort included a brickyard, lime kiln, stone quarry, grist mill, saw mill, and cooper shop. The first winter was harsh, with over 200 men dying from scurvy due to supply shortages.
The garrison's only major combat occurred in 1823 when soldiers retaliated against Arikara tribesmen who had attacked a fur trading party, and seven soldiers drowned en route, becoming the first U.S. casualties in the Indian Wars on the Great Plains. As U.S. interests shifted westward and the fur trade declined in importance, the fort's strategic value diminished, and it was abandoned in 1827. The site was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1961.
