Quick BriefFort Maurepas was the first European settlement in Mississippi and the first capital of the French colony of Louisiana. History & Significance

The fort was completed on May 1, 1699 under direction of French explorer Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville, who departed on May 4, 1699, leaving about 100 people at the fort. M. de Sauvolle de la Villantry served as governor, with Bienville, Iberville's teenage brother, as second in command.

The fort was designed by Remy Reno, Iberville's draftsman, using the military fortification system developed by Marshall Vauban. Built as a four-sided fort with pointed bastions at each corner mounting 12 guns, the structure covered over 21,500 square feet of ground with bastions, palisades, living quarters, warehouses made from local oak, walnut, and pine.

Fort Maurepas was designated as capital of Louisiana in 1699, with the capital moved to Mobile in 1710, then to New Orleans in 1723. Colonists suffered from tropical diseases; the governor, M. de Sauvolle, died in the summer of 1701.

The struggling settlement was relocated to Mobile in 1701, and by spring 1702, Fort Maurepas was totally abandoned. In the 20th century, a replica of Fort Maurepas was built at the site but was badly damaged by Hurricane Katrina in August 2005.
