History & Significance

Fort Boykin dates to 1623 when colonists were ordered to build a fort following the devastating Indian Attack of 1622, and was constructed by Captain Roger Smith on orders from the Governor's Council. Originally called the Castle or Fort at Warroskoyack, it would have been triangular in shape and surrounded by a ditch.

The fort was active during Bacon's Rebellion and refortified during the American Revolution, named in honor of Francis Boykin, an officer in the Continental Army. During the War of 1812, Fort Boykin was enlarged into an irregular five-pointed star shape to protect the James River from British gunboats, with local militia foiling a British landing attempt while the HMS Plantagenent anchored nearby.

In the Civil War, Confederate State Engineer Andrew Talcott was assigned to survey potential defenses along the James River, and between June 1861 and May 1862, the Confederate Army refurbished and refortified Fort Boykin under Talcott's supervision and Lieutenant W.G. Turpin. On May 8, the USS Galena, USS Port Royal and USS Aroostook attacked Fort Boykin with the worst fire directed at it, leading to Confederate abandonment. The fort is now property of Isle of Wight County and a public park.
