Fort Monmouth (Monmouth County, New Jersey)
Monmouth County · New Jersey · World War II

History & Significance
Established on June 17, 1917, during World War I, Fort Monmouth was the only Signal Corps post in the United States, initially created to train communications troops as the Signal Corps expanded its capacity. The Signal Corps School began classes in October 1919, and the fort's name honors fallen soldiers from the Battle of Monmouth Courthouse, which took place in 1778 in Freehold, New Jersey.
During World War II, Fort Monmouth at its peak measured 1,713 acres and had billeting space for 1,559 officers and 19,786 enlisted personnel. The Signal Corps Officer Candidate School on the main post graduated 21,033 new Signal Corps second lieutenants between 1941 and 1946.
Beyond radar development, the first U.S. aircraft detection radar was developed in 1938, and space communications was proved feasible in 1946 when Project Diana bounced electronic signals off the moon. Julius Rosenberg worked as a radar inspector at Fort Monmouth in 1942–1943 and was later accused and convicted of stealing proximity fuze plans for the Soviet Union. After the war, Fort Monmouth served as headquarters of the Communications-Electronics Command from 1981 until closure in 2011.
