History & Significance

Sandy Hook Proving Ground was established in 1874 as a weapons testing area for coast defense ordnance. Construction of artillery batteries at Fort Hancock began in 1890 as part of the large-scale Endicott Program, which proposed a comprehensive system of forts defending port cities beginning in 1885.

The first batteries were Battery Potter and Battery Reynolds; Potter was the first 12-inch disappearing gun battery built in the United States. Beginning with the Spanish-American War and continuing through World War I, Fort Hancock served as an important harbor defense site and coast artillery training center.

From 1937 through 1942, the U.S. Army Signal Corps developed and improved early radar systems at Sandy Hook; following the attack on Pearl Harbor, the fort became a training center for units headed abroad and headquarters for harbor defenses of the New York coastal region. During the Cold War from 1954 to 1974, the Army operated a Nike air defense missile system at the site; in 1975, Fort Hancock was deactivated and became part of Gateway National Recreation Area. In 1982, it was designated the Fort Hancock and Sandy Hook Proving Ground National Historic Landmark District.
