History & Significance

Constructed during the Second Seminole War in 1836, Fort White was built to protect the Cow Creek settlement in north-central Florida. The Second Seminole War (1835–1842) began as a result of the United States unilaterally voiding the Treaty of Moultrie Creek and demanding that all Seminoles relocate to Indian Territory under the Indian Removal Act (1830).

Hostilities commenced in December 1835 with the Dade Massacre and continued with engagements throughout the peninsula. Fort White served a critical logistical role: supplies arrived by steamboat up the Santa Fe River and were distributed from the fort to other area military posts.

In late 1836, Major General Thomas Jesup was placed in command of the war effort, concentrating on wearing the Seminoles down through large military presence across the state, eventually bringing a force of more than 9,000 men under his command. Fort White was abandoned on June 26, 1842 due to illness among the troops.

The settlement relocated 4 miles east due to sickness, flooding along the river, and rumors of the railroad's arrival. No remains of the fort are visible today. The town of Fort White was officially incorporated as a municipality in 1884, named after the military fort.
